Why do I have a phobia?

Our brains are wired for survival. They do a really good job of keeping us safe, like jumping out of the way of a barking dog. Typically, this scary experience will be balanced out by positive ones (most dogs are good girls/boys after all 🐶) and the fear fades away.

But under specific conditions (ie: if you were under a lot of stress at the time), the fear response can become so overwhelming that your brain doesn’t have an opportunity to take on new experiences. Every time you come across your phobia, it triggers a cascade of responses in your body & mind, like increased heart rate, anxiety, and heightened fear. This perpetuates the cycle of fear.

At its worst, having a phobia can hinder your quality of life and isolate you from the world, leaving you feeling trapped in a cycle of anxiety and avoidance.
